It's easy:

Open Vidalia/Tor, click set up relaying, enable "Relay Traffic for the Tor network", and uncheck the all the services (this way you won't have to worry about people posting stuff with your IP).

How would tor nodes that only relay to other nodes speed the network up? The end-nodes would still be swamped.

I do. Tor is fucking slow when using it to browse the regular web. Common sense would dictate that this is the case. Do you have any evidence to dispute my claim?

If you are accessing a hidden service, exit nodes aren't involved. Just relays.

And if you are accessing the outside internet you need a few relays to get you to the exit node.

There is a shortage at the moment, which is why the EFF called for more people to volunteer.
