Because otherwise a religion would die out quickly. Religions that do promote suicide tend to not last very long, so Darwinian evolution would tend to favor religions that go to great lengths to prevent suicide.

I mean because if heaven is so much better than earth why not just confess your sins, seek salvation in Christ, and then take cyanide?
