Topic: knife maintenance day

squeegee started this discussion 8 years ago #66,531

how are the edges on your pocket knives? if they're anything like mine they'll need rebeveling. i chipped my work knife and just finished beveling it and i reshaped a tip for a coworker that snapped it off. i also made a strop for polishing and honing out of a chunk of wood and old leather wiped down with jewlers rouge. so far so good, they're back to looking almost new.

I was planning knife maintenance day for Friday, but today is as good as any. The sooner the better probably.

that sucks. if it's bad then you can try electrolosis if you don't want to wire brush it or do something that'll remove material. it's not hard but kind of a pain to set up if you don't have it all ready to go.

I have so many that it really doesn't matter. I have a whole drawer of old and new ones. I even have a couple of the ones that are only an inch long.

i have a favorite work knife i keep in good shape, and a dress knife that doesn't get used that much so it hardly needs anything. but i am getting tired of my current work knife, it's a straight edge with a tanto tip mostly used for puncturing and slicing but i'm tired of the tanto, i kinda want to try a sheeps foot.

@817,562 (Meta)
have you seen the new Buck 110 auto? it's pretty slick. i might end up getting another Buck knife and get the smaller version of the 110. but the mall ninja in me really wants something from Cold Steel.

i've been using a cold steel knife for a couple of years now and tbh it's flat out the best knife i've ever owned. it has a few scratches on the blade and the belt clip is worn and showing metal under the powder coat, but the handle is evidently made from magic because it's still perfect and the lock snaps back like new. the edge has held up extremely well and only ever gave out and chipped when i was doing irresponsible prying with it, but, it's still my go-to prying tool. i use it so much that if i actually do switch blade types then i'll probably really miss having a tanto.

but yeah, they don't lie, if you're looking to do a lot of piercing then a cold steel tanto is perfect. i bet it totally can go right through a car door.

I have a cold steel bushman and a panga machete. I like the bushman. I mounted it on a shovel handle as a spear. The point is a bit chipped from me playing bushman in the backyard throwing it at imaginary antelope. The panga is terrible though, wasn't even heat treated at all. If I need a machete I use my Tramontina. The Brazilians know their machetes.

I want to get a cold steel ti-lite. I actually want a Beltrame switchblade but I'm worried they're cheap junk sold as novelties not knives. It's funny, I can now legally carry a switchblade but I'm reluctant to purchase one and will probably get the non-switchblade cold steel one.

Cold steel definitely has the marketing down. I don't think Buck has ever made a video of them stabbing the 110 through a car door or a pig carcass (though it certainly would).

Actually what was the point of even banning switchblades when framlock/linerlock knives open just as fast? Did legislators really see West Side Story and worry juvenile delinquents would go on stabbing sprees with stiletto switchblades?

i don't really know enough about switch blades to weigh in, i've just used a couple of spring bar assist type knives and those were alright. had one from kershaw i think that was nice. i'd love to get a good switch blade, let me know how they are if you get one. i was also looking at the ti-lites and this one, but i think they're kinda long for an everyday utility type knife. 4" would be better. i may end up getting a switchblade cause they're fun, but i'd probably get a cool fixed blade dagger if i'm buying for fun. always wanted a fixed blade dagger, i just have absolutely no need for one. except for killing a man there's not much use for things like daggers, switchblades and bowie knives :/

oh, i should have taken a picture of the knife i reshaped the tip on for a coworker. he'd previously used a rotary tool and drum sander attachment to make it pointy-ish again but it was butter knife dull and really rough. not even close to beveled. i spent a fair amount of time with a flat steel block and sandpaper reshaping the tip and beveling the edge before grinding on a stone. it's the reason i made a strop block, it was pretty badly scratched up and needed a lot of polishing. that and i like making tools. he was pretty happy with the results, i'm sure a professional could've done a better job, but it's back sharp and cutting his fingers again just fine he says. the knife was a gift from his son and had his initials engraved into it so he was glad to have it in good shape again.

i'm still not happy with the edge on my knife, it's a lot better but i think i over honed it when stropping and lost some sharpness. sure looks nice and polished though. and i think i need to regrind the bevel on the entire edge and not just the tip where it was chipped. that part of the blade edge has gotten back pretty sharp but i think it needs more work.

i mean, it's actually fine. it's sharp enough, we use razors for anything that requires a super flat razor sharp edge, but yeah, i mean, it could be sharper.

my knife is clipped to the lip of my pocket, I carry it daily, and I've never sharpened it.

I don't use it much. I do feel like a little bit of a poseur because I'm so uninvolved with it. I do at least feel some security to know I have it for self defense when walking alone at night or if I ever needed to cut a seatbelt in an emergency.

nah, there's nothing wrong with carrying a knife regardless how much you use it, when you need it you have it and that's all there is to it. i had a buddy who got jumped at a gas station late at night and he fought them off with a little 2" keychain knife that was a groomsman gift at a wedding we went to. stabbed a dude in the gut and cut another dudes arms up before he finally got locked into his car and they took off. he kinda got fucked up though, kicked in the head and whatnot. cops accused him of a drug deal gone wrong and tried to arrest him, lol. but that's what you get when you're traveling through a small town in texas and get into trouble. sometimes you gotta stab someone so they don't steal your kicks.

mostly though i use mine to puncture things and cut up boxes and sometimes carve up little bits of wood.

to a lesser extent, bubblewrap, but that i prefer to pop individually with my bare hands. or sometimes by walking on it. or rolling a box dolly over it. it's just not good for the environment to throw away encapsulated bits of the atmosphere we need to breathe. it's irresponsible.

But you're also sequestering the CO2 trapped inside the bubbles.

Each bubble in every sheet of bubble wrap is actually blown up by an underpaid Chinese kid. There are factories with hundreds of children, each inflating tens of thousands of bubbles per day, working for only pennies in order to satisfy the world's growing need for bubble packing.

you know what, i went looking for that kershaw knife i had and i remembered it broke, but i think i might've been kinda hard on it. ended up snapping off the tip and bending up some of the serrations but it held an edge for a long time and was a decent enough cutter. i was still using it to do work that would likely damage an edge or tapping the spine with a hammer to help split or separate something, but what ended up killing it was the internal spring bar thing broke. it wouldn't open automatically anymore and the blade didn't lock properly so it was pretty unsafe to continue to use. that's when i got this cold steel knife.

i think the mechanism in automatics are just more delicate and can't take the same kind of hard use a good standard folder can endure. i'd still probably carry an automatic if i really needed to be guaranteed an easy one handed opening knife but most folders i see these days can be opened one handed easily enough. i'd still get a switchblade for fun, but i wouldn't expect even a good quality knife like that to take any real abuse. like, if you're using it to do anything but stab through human torsos then you're probably not using it as designed and could potentially damage it.

oh, also i found basically what looks like a folding steak knife that's pretty sweet, it's probably not really a steak knife but it's a steak knife. long, thin, serrated edge, just like a steak knife. i kinda want one so i can take it out at restaurants and make a big production about how inferior everyone's dining situation is compared to mine with my fancy folding japanese steak knife. that's exactly the kind of thing i'd do.
