as a certified hippie yuppie, I can attest it is pretty hard to spend $20 on one salad at Whole Foods
My record is $13 and that to-go box was nearly bursting at the seams. That salad was a giant meal.
If you dined in and piled the bowl high with dense things like meats, cheeses, beans, and a shitload of dressing then I'm guessing $39 could be possible.

How does the salad bar at Whole Foods work? Is there someone that watches you/assembles the salad for you or do you just tell the cashier what you got?

Honestly it is a very good deal

Bacon is like $4/lb at the grocery store and it loses more than half its weight in grease in the frying pan. So it would be cheaper to buy cooked bacon at $8.50/lb than to buy raw bacon at $4/lb and cook it.
Can you really get a "salad" and just load it up with a whole pound of bacon for $8.50??????

Look at the pics and do a fast skim of the article - Prices vary apparently depending on location - Article points out expensive olives cost more on the shelf per pound then at the salad bar. As I said it is a VERY Good deal. Also they feature open bottles of expensive olive oil to pour on - Not just some random oil with no clue who made it.

Well outside my 15 myle zone n more like 40 minute drive is a Indian Casino that offers for FREE all the main lobster you can eat (the first visit)
From then on its about $25 and it is one hell of a buffet because it caters to an Asian community that in USA has high standards on shell fish.
I have watched people pile on the lobsters - Me I don't think I have had more than two at one time because there are so many other fyne choices
Of course they figure its a loss leader cause people pour money into the gaming devices on each visit

Recently I took a friend with only a high school degree to lunch. Insensitively, I led her into a gourmet sandwich shop. Suddenly I saw her face freeze up as she was confronted with sandwiches named “Padrino” and “Pomodoro” and ingredients like soppressata, capicollo and a striata baguette. I quickly asked her if she wanted to go somewhere else and she anxiously nodded yes and we ate Mexican.
American upper-middle-class culture (where the opportunities are) is now laced with cultural signifiers that are completely illegible unless you happen to have grown up in this class. They play on the normal human fear of humiliation and exclusion. Their chief message is, “You are not welcome here.”
When I go into fancy places like Chipotle or Starbucks I get the feeling "you don't belong here". I have to remember what the Italian for "large coffee" is. It makes me feel alienated.

I mean why can't they just make it simple? McDonalds has this figured out. "Large black coffee". Just give me a 20oz cup of coffee. Why I do need to order a "venti sopressato americano molto capicollo" or some shit? If I wanted to order Italian coffee I would be in Italy. Speak American.

Lol literally all that is is italian food. There is nothing middle class about Italian meat sandwiches; working class Italians eat that shit for lunch. That article was so dumb. There is nothing inherently more "low class" about Mexican food, it was just more commonly eaten than italian food by the poor person in this anecdote.

I'm guessing David Brooks "friend" in the article wasn't Italian. I don't know what any of those words mean and I would have had difficulty ordering as well. If they just called it "salami", "ham", etc. it would be easier. Again it's like Starbucks venti/grande/trenta bullshit Italian sizes. A prole coffee shop would just have small/medium/large.
But again you are closer to Brooks - being highly educated, upper class, elite Manhattanite - than I am.

None of that stuff is really accurately described as "ham" though. I also don't know most of those words but that's because I don't eat that much Italian food. It's not a class thing it's just knowledge of a culture's food. If I took an Italian cop earning $35k/yr to this "high class" sandwich shop he'd know exactly what's going on. Starbucks makes more sense because the Italian serves no purpose whatsoever and is really trying to sound trendy or whatever. They provide free WiFi and bathrooms though so I let that slide.
@817,770 (Meta)
Nothing. I'm sure they have a LP dude there or something but higher end stores tend to rely on the fact that people who shop there don't need to steal to eat and so they generally don't cheat the system.

Right, and if I took a French guy with only a high school education to a French bistro he'd know what all that fancy crap means and how to pronounce it correctly. The Italian cop wouldn't.
The thing is neither you nor David Brooks (nor I) are Italian. But learning all these Italian sandwich things is a way to signal class for those who aren't Italian.
