I don't get it. It doesn't cost anything to not believe in God so economic disparity shouldn't be a reason. I myself am a lower class atheist. Dawkins books aren't terribly expensive and you can even check them out from the library for free. Even if atheism was somehow a "boys club" there's no way even the most virulent racist misogynistic atheists could stop anyone from not believing in god.
Atheism is inherently nonracial and indeed it would be pretty hard to believe in racial purity when we're all related to each other and the human species began in Africa. Fun experiment you can try at home: go to a racist group and start asking which ethnicities are "white". The flamewar will never end. Stormfront had to specifically ban this question because race is more of a spectrum than neat little groups.

However, "nothing in particular" which sounds a lot like weak/implicit atheism has pretty equal racial representation to the US as a whole, but is still skewed 53:47 male to female.
Why is there an imbalance between people who define themselves as explicitly atheist/agnostic and people who define themselves as "nothing in particular" which mean pretty much the same thing.

It's a shitty and depressing worldview (I can attest to that), especially given that the most evil people get exactly the same fate as the most virtuous. I certainly hold no animosity toward the religious and indeed I wish I could be religious too.

I would say that's one of many likely factors. I'm guessing the question is tied up in societal norms, access to and expectation of education, socioeconomic trends, and bunch of other things. If you ask broad questions about large populations, then there generally isn't going to be a tidy answer.
