They would've taken it on the spot if they wanted it. I've known scrap metal/copper thieves. They always grab it as soon as they see it because they don't see metal/copper when they look at it. They see money instead. They believe that if they don't steal it fast enough, someone else will get it.

One does NOT need a proper weapon to protect your copper.
Just run a single INSULATED wire from the hot side of your AC outlet and cover with dirt and connect to your copper. Unless the thieves are wearing gloves they will learn a lesson quickly. If you want to help them learn a lesson with gloves on I can show you a dirt cheep way to solve that as well.
