What sort of soil contaminants are there in this unfertile, unproductive land? High levels of toxins have been found only inches below the topsoil layer in many urban areas.
You don't eat shell fish out of a busy harbor, why eat mutant discolored urban tomatoes?

Not all towns have chemicals poisoning the water supply, I personally wouldn't eat food grown locally here, in west Texas, because of the amount of chromium 32 that has been found in the water. Know your city, know your pollutants.

Urban gardens are easy to do safely. If growing in old soil with an unknown past you can send soil samples to local university extension offices. They provide free or low cost testing for common hazards like heavy metals and will also detect mineral deficiencies.
I grow in 10–20 gallon UV-stable plastic tubs from Anderson Die & Manufacturing Co. My soil media is a potting mix blend of perlite, composted bark, chicken manure, and peat moss. I fertilize with Roots Organics liquids. Both the soil and fertilizer are tested for heavy metals and intended for human consumption.
