Topic: FAO: The guy who makes 3D models using a drone

What software do you use? Does it just need a video? Can I make a 3D model using my toy drone?

It depends on how expensive your drone is; if your drone costs a lot of money, you can resell it on eBay and use the money to buy a 3d printer. You can then use this 3d printer to print more drones that work just as well.

@Brie

I think he mentions it here.

Potentially you can yes. Watch this guys youtube vids about how to do it, it's everything you need to know to start
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCp6x8JP7oCiiTjbJorPPMsQ/videos

Your camera is probably too shit to get good results though. A large sensor, good lens, low ISO, high fstop and fixed focal length are pretty important. I've not had any luck using cell phone cameras, but I have an S8 now so it would probably be alright if I tried it. Small drones have cell phone cameras with tiny sensors in them. I'm using a P4Pro it has a 1" CMOS sensor, the next step up is an Inspire which is pretty much a flying DSLR. You'll need a beast of a computer if you start processing over 10 gigapixels or a lot of patience.

Good luck

Thanks, I might as well try to with my little drone. It has a 1280x720 camera and probably not the best sensor.

I'm starting to think you really deserved to make that $1000. This is a giant pain in the ass to do isn't it?

I think it is.

It's a giant pain in the ass to even get started, then it's a giant pain in the ass to practice while getting shit results for a while. Then when you get good results it's a giant pain in the ass to edit the mesh and remap the UV.
I've been playing around with this and learning how to do it for maybe 18 months, spent $5k on a DSLR and a drone and am looking to spend more on a good computer. I can consistently get good results now, but I want the processing time to come down.

I'm thinking Ryzen ThreadRipper, 128Gb ram, and two 1080ti's should take my processing time from 6 hours down to less than half an hour. It's turning into an expensive hobby but I did get that $1000 out of it.

Looks like I might need an Nvidia GPU? I just bought one but I need a 6-pin to 8-pin adapter for power, my PSU doesn't have an 8-pin connector.

Yeah I guess so. I've got Nvidia so I didn't notice
