I was hoping for a story set in an established Minecraft world, but it is clever how the author is incorporating aspects of the game to a protagonist (assuming that is the author of the book) from our world that is thrust into this strange new cubic one. They could have poked fun at the simulation hypothesis with the main characters discovering that their world isn't real. I just finished chapter one so let's see where this goes. He just arrived on the island and learned how to eat as well as pick up blocks.

If you like this book, I recommend 'The Legend of the 10 Elemental Masters' by Nick Smith.

There was an interesting New York Times article about it, the author is actually quite thoughtful and accomplished, this doesn't sound like just a cash-in type project. The author was a writer for Saturday Night Live and a voice actor and had a successful career writing zombie fiction before this, some were made into movies. Fun fact, he is Mel Brooks' son. Thanks.

He's really Mel Brooks' son? I thought the name similarities were coincidental.

The book doesn't feel like a cash in to be honest. It's not a guide to playing Minecraft, even though in a weird way, it kind of is. And he seems to like seeding life lessons into each chapter. I just finished chapter three a few minutes ago. Some of those lessons are, "panic drowns thought" and "don't assume anything". Something tells me he wanted to write this novel.

I wanted to add that in the very back of the book there is a list of all of these "life lessons" seeded throughout the chapters in one easy to look up index.

I just found something else that is interesting and kind of weird. There are two audiobooks made for this novel. One of them is narrated by a woman named Samira Wiley which judging by the excerpt reads like how you would expect an audiobook to read. The other one is narrated by Jack Black, yes, that one, that one comedian and musician from Tenacious D and movies like School of Rock and Nacho Libre.

EDIT: I just realized that Samira Wiley was Poussey from Netflix's Orange is the New Black.
