This thread is made to be a catch-all for all Star Citizen conversation and news.

I'll update this thread when there are new releases or anything related to Star Citizen that might be of interest to people here. If you're thinking of making your own Star Citizen thread, consider posting your thoughts here instead of making a new topic. (part 1 - part 2 - part 3)

https://www.twitch.tv/starcitizen - Gamescom Stream 8/25 @ 7pm UTC

Gamescom is going on right now and CIG is doing a presentation in about an hour and a half. they have a booth this year showcasing a cut down 3.0 build giving players access to one of the new procedural moons. many features are cut out for a variety of reasons, the least of which is some of them aren't finished. it's cool seeing what it all looks like, but we've all seen this stuff before, just haven't gotten to see this much of it.

the presentation boasts to once again have a new "game changing" surprise (procedural cities would be my guess, vast unlocked urban areas) but we know we're not going to be seeing anything from Squadron 42. probably they are holding back some content to be showcased at Citizen Con next month. we will be getting a first look at probably several new ships/vehicles at today's presentation, and we're already seeing some of the redesigned early ships like the Aurora (pictured) and the new Cutlass.

it's also sounding like a release for 3.0 is firming up around early september, there are still several items to work through on the schedule but they're pretty close. we hear that performance is way up since engineers put a heavy focus on client/server performance and are including quite a lot of early optimizations to improve the player experience. we'll see about that. but the stream coming out of gamescom does look promising, they are running everything on the cloud and it's very smooth. monster hardware though, i7-7700k's and 1080ti's with 32gb ram :)

the redesigned aurora. tonight we'll be seeing a new ship, the 600i, a long anticipated ship that'll likely be a luxury mid sized smuggling ship or something. and there are other ships in the game with secret cargo storage areas for smuggling cargo. and there's drug labs cause we can make drugs and smuggle drugs around.

there've also been a couple of interviews and it sounds like CIG has decided to expand on the survival aspect a bit, early on they didn't want stuff to feel grindy so they didn't think requiring people to eat/drink would be fun gameplay, that maybe food and drink would just buff you, but now it sounds like they're going for soft survival. you need to eat, but, if you don't eat it'll take a long time to die. more like real life, and food won't restore health it doesn't sound like, more like eating keeps your vitality up and if you don't eat you'll eventually starve after weeks (think stranding yourself on a moon) but to regain health after being shot you'd use medical stuff/hospitals.

so it doesn't sound like we'll be needing to be constantly carrying a bunch of food around with us all the time, but maybe we'll want a ship with a kitchen/bathroom to make survival easier.

i like it, i think it helps establish progression from a low to higher tier ship with better facilities. also, i hope that AI crew respond to ships with better facilities too, maybe AI that would mutiny if you refused to provide them with on board food.

hmm, okay, it's not going to be any procedural cities tech. we've heard they were doing r&d on that, but i guess it's not that. i guess we'll just have to wait and see what the "game changer" is.

squeegee (OP) septuple-posted this 9 years ago, 2 minutes later, 32 minutes after the original post[^] [v] #807,256

twitch chat assures me it's going to be a "love making" minigame. if it offers up as granular gameplay as mixing drinks for passengers on cruise ships then it's going to be disgusting.

It's interesting how games are now. When I was a kid game companies would release a game and it was done. Maybe they'd release a patch or a version 1.1 if there was a problem or bug or something but the game was pretty much in its final state at launch.

Now these new games may never be completed. There isn't any more concept of a game being done. It's like asking when the universe is going to be "finished" it doesn't mean anything.

squeegee (OP) replied with this 9 years ago, 17 minutes later, 1 hour after the original post[^] [v] #807,262

@previous (Meta)
there's still traditional games being made with the old publisher model, but you're right more and more early access are becoming the norm. i dislike the early access model for the most part, they'll burn through most of their player base while under development and have little financial reason towards the end to complete much. publisher tend to not get too experimental with mechanics they don't see as "driving sales" and so games end up feeling cookie cutter and repetitive, but early access games which do tend to use more experimental mechanics don't tend to finish them since novelty drives their sales and that wears off pretty quick. in my mind early access has as many problems as the standard publisher model.

and i think you're right, some games are never done. World of Warcraft is one that is pretty much never done but they have pretty hard edges between expansions. but, those edges are muddied with new content updates every 2-3 months or so. that game has constantly evolved and never quit changing or adding content, but, at times people would have called things "released" or something like that i guess. i can see the kind of world/universe game like an MMO as being one that has fuzzy edges between new content updates that never makes it fully "complete" in the sense that Mario Bros. was a "finished" game, but yeah others just drag on the bug fixes and don't do much but occasionally patch in new outfits or something lame and maybe release new maps and those games never leave early access and there's no reason for it except they'll be held to a higher standard as soon as they do. and why bother if sales are languishing because the novelty wore off?

a great example is the new Player Unknown's battlefield. it's early access and they sold like 600k copies last i read. at 30 bucks a pop plus people buying loot boxes they've made something like 20 million plus dollars. we'll see if the game actually gets the kind of development that a 20 million dollar budget can bring, or, if they'll bug fix until it's "stable" and then add maps until it's "done" and then call it done and roll their profit into some other endeavor. personally i believe they have a responsibility to their players to expand their dev team and turn pubg into a true AAA experience and with 20 million bucks they could get loans out the ass and inflate their budget to a true AAA title budget and really deliver a bad ass and worthwhile game experience.

but, i kinda expect it'll languish in early access for 2 years while bug fixes roll in from time to time and the game breaking hacking issues will never be addressed.

Also games are getting like exponentially more complex. Thinking about GTA there was only one year between GTA III and Vice City, only two years between Vice City and San Andreas, but four years between SA and IV, and five years between IV and V.

Back in the like Atari 2600 days a "AAA" game like Pitfall could be made entirely by one guy in a few months. Now video games have hundreds of people working for like years and using tools written by hundreds of other people. It's amazing games can get made at all, trying to coordinate all that.

that's why i've liked watching star citizen development, it's really transparent and you get the impression how difficult logistics and organizing is especially since they develop 24 hours a day across several studios across the world. it's way more than just coding, they built a whole production company. and i think that's the transition small teams of coders have a hard time making.

that was cringy the way it was handled. and they're going to get raked over the coals for this whole "face over ip thing" given the number of bugs and jankiness we're still seeing. that's a pretty out there and wild feature to be adding, but when they're in the ship talking to each other and leaning to look at each other it looked pretty fucking impressive.

at times it looks really impressive, other times it looks terrible. long way to go

they said webcam, yeah. the better one you got the better the tracking they said. it's 3rd party software they're integrating in they said, so idk. it looks very much like it does in game what Track-IR does for head tracking in games. i guess with vr goggles it'll just see your mouth. maybe put some googlie eyes on the headset, idk.

this is all pretty out there isn't it.

the best mission to farm is the covalex PI mission. it's PvP but there's rarely anyone there and there's no ai to fight. you can also go turn on arrays and avoid pirates by flying to the satellite and just getting out of your ship. the pirates won't attack you out of your ship and i think they leave your ship alone when you get out. if they blow up your ship then suicide and respawn.

you can repeat the covalex mission on a new server.

they just got done with presentations on character animations and improvements, and then they did one on rendering and did a pretty detailed walk through on what the GPU was doing frame by frame to render a scene. pretty cool stuff. right now they're on the show floor talking to developers in between presentations. pretty cool so far.

squadron 42 is going to be nuts, they went over earlier a new tech they're finishing up that gives the ai characters a very natural looking way of looking at you as they talk. some games do this, where the npc looks at you and can follow you as you walk around so they talk to you, but lots of games still lock you in place so the NPC can turn and look at you and not have to follow you. think skyrim or fallout 4. star citizen will be different, and so the npcs have eye tracking and head tracking and body tracking and it looks pretty neat. so you can walk with them as they talk and they'll turn to look at you as they talk and stuff. hard to describe, but looks great in the demo we saw.

panels are over, keynote in half an hourish. the pioneer sounds pretty bad ass. it is a base building ship, and you can claim plots of land on planets and moons. you'll also be able to build outposts outside of uee space without a claim and do illegal stuff. it kinda sounds like a lot of micromanagement though, like you'll have to buy specific materials and add-on parts in specific quantities or you'll be making extra trips to collect or deliver materials. but, that's not really the problem of the people having outposts built, just the builders.

Externally hosted imagearc corp from space. you can fly down anywhere. below is area 17.

Externally hosted imagearc corp from within the atmosphere. this is taken just above Area 17, one of the metropolitan centers. the tech shown off for the procedural cities was amazing, the tool they use lets them "sim city" the entire thing and define areas very granularly all the way down the the kinds of businesses in the area. the system then takes the inputs and uses a seed to procedurally draw the entire city as designed.

Externally hosted imageflying around area 17. most interesting is that the buildings have interiors. there are landing pads all over the place, and each building can be walked. they do this procedurally as well, the interiors are all from a huge modular kit of assets the game puts together to create unique locations. the locations are also populated with shops and NPCs.

Externally hosted imagethe planet Hurston. this is another megacorp headquarters similar to Arc Corp. the company owns the entire planet, and this one is now a wasteland because of it. Hurston is a very old corporation, going back to the Messer era of imperial expansion. through the centuries the planet hurston has been strip mined and polluted and is covered with massive trash dumps from manufacturing.

edit: on the stream it took them 8 minutes to fly from Arc Corp to Hurston, they actually brought out a speaker and did a mini presentation on the technology behind procedural cities while in route to Hurston.

Externally hosted imagethere's a monorail. the city zones are all interconnected, and they plan for people to be able to get from place to place by using other transportation. you can go from the arc crop landing zone in area 18 and hop on a monorail and take that into the suburbs or into an industrial zone or whatnot. the stuff they just kinda casually mentioned here and there -buildings with internal spaces, interconnected cities with public transportation, flora and fauna all over a realistically rotating planet with surface velocities of a thousand miles an hour that you walk across- there was a lot to take in from the whole 6 hours of panels and presentations.

edit: this was the best citizen con they've done yet

@previous (brie !iFDoautiSM)
idk. they didn't really update on that. just said very soon. i've heard conflicting Evocati opinions on release. chris roberts did mention they are changing how they do releases and are moving back to a more date centric rather than content centric cycle after 3.0. it's been 10 months since the last big patch and longer even since 2.0 came out. we should start getting big quarterly patches and will just bump unfinished content from the release. i think they can do this because they have finished so much of the underlying tech work and won't be waiting 10 months for key pieces of very difficult tech to be finished by engineers. we'll see how that goes, but they're aiming for more reliable releases than they've given us over the last year. which will be nice.

yup. just lacks bunches of content, so don't expect more than about 10 hours of unique gameplay before you're repeating things.
