I got a kick out of that LA Times story about how Israel has no problem with trans people in the army and it turned out there were like five trans people in the entire IDF.

and military service is mandatory for practically all people. do they just have less tranners there? it seems in the west that at least one out of five people is tranned, gauging by the exposure and attention in the last few years

That's what I wonder too. Everyone has to join for a couple of years so if there were X% transgender people in Israel you should expect X% in the IDF too.
The Israel Defense Forces have knowingly included transgender soldiers since 1998. In 2014, the Israeli military said it had at least five transgender members and would support future such conscripts. As of last year, it was among 19 countries, including the United States, that allowed transgender people to serve in the military.
The IDF has 5 transgender members out of 176,500 active duty members. 1 in 35,300 are transgender or 0.0028%
