Yes. They had a top speed around 12 mph and were built to last five years. Doctrine was to run them at top speed to evade enemies. If they only averaged half speed of 6 mph and only operated half duty then they would travel 26,280 miles in one year.

Let's pretend he caught a train to San Diego and the ship went straight to Manila, Philippines without stopping at Hawaii. That's a 14,811 mile round trip. This excludes their trips up and back and around the Chinese eastern coast. I'm not sure that doctrine was to travel absolutely straight and I know there were specific safe corridors through which they sailed. Would the ships travel 35 percent further than the distance of the naively ideal round trip? Yeah, that is absolutely reasonable.
