The effects of having a large amount of people in conflict with the law and/or mainstream morality gathered in one place.
The concept of, and claim that "even evil has standards", and how it influences gang codes and rank inside prisons.
I want to see if the concept of some kind of Social Contract can be proven by looking at certain subcultures that evolved inside the mainstream, or if the only law they know is the law of the iron fist.

Some of these questions might sound naive, but I am of the conviction that very few truths are as self-evident as people assume them to be.

I've only just seen this. I don't know many good books on the subject, but this is a bit of an eye opener albeit hosted by an ex soap star.

I suppose looking into the likes of Combat 18 (even though they're white nationalist pricks) and how through their connections, keep drugs flowing throughout the UK. The same can also be said for the hells angels.
Actually, I do know one that was recommended to me a while back, My Story - Ron Kray. It is an biography about two prolific twins who were big gangsters during the middle part of the 20th Century. Ronnie and Redgie Kray, you might of heard of them? They're synonymous in British folk lore/contemporary crime culture.

Also, check out the Peruvian gang culture. Apparently they're an anthropological eye opener. Whole communities of prisoners existing without interference from prison wardens.
