I want to help people solve this statue problem. I don't understand paint throwing. Some guy's just gonna come out tomorrow with a bucket of paint thinner and a sponge and take off all the paint like it never even happened. But if you etch the metal, that's gonna take a lot more than a sponge to fix.

200 grams is nothing. this site says a 12" tall bronze sculpture would weigh between 6 and 10 lbs. http://www.bronzeartwork.com/faq.htm#is_bronze
a cold-cast (resin mixed with metal powder) sculpture of the same size would only be a couple of pounds, apparently.
according to this sculptor, a life-sized bust (ie just head and shoulders) of cold-cast resin would weigh around 40 lbs. http://www.everlysculpture.com/faq.html
so a bronze life-sized bust would weigh ~120-200 lbs. just for the head and shoulders. and statues of that sort are usually larger than life-sized.
200 grams is less than half a pound.
so you're talking thousands of dollars in ferric chloride.

also my point still stands. a liter of that shit would manage to dissolve less than 0.5% of just a life-sized bust. that's a miniscule portion of a larger-than-life full statue. and that's if it were 100% effective which i doubt.

Perhaps it could be mixed with a gel or some kind of thickener and daubed on the statue? Maybe there's other easily obtainable chemicals that might work?
