When no one's there to protest them? Most of the statues are hollow bronze and could easily be cut through with a gas powered angle grinder or abrasive saw. In fact you could even get teams of two or three people with saws and I bet they could get it done in two minutes or less. The saws could also be used to obliterate any plaques or engraving at the base of the statue.
You don't even need to remove the whole statue, just the head. In fact that would probably send an even more powerful message.

I don't know their intents, but it seems to me a thoughful person would not cause harm to an artifact. The statue never killed anybody or was ever a separatist. Just give it a home in a viewing building where artifacts are kept.
