This is an interesting question. And to answer it I would have to change your setting a bit. Think about it being set in a 18th century pharmacy with a soda jerk behind the counter mixing flavors of soda. He has many choices of flavoring syrups and flavor additive to choose from some are common like lemon or lime others are exotic like cocaine or kola nut. If you have never taste something then there is only known flavors to compare it to and cocaine flavor is not a good one nor is kola nut but combined and sweetened with enough sugar they became the most popular soda flavor coca-cola. Other popular flavors were sasparilla a type of bramble and root beer made from sassafras bark or roots. Now knowing this and the fact that we know that drPepper is infact 23 different flavors you would have to look at the common flavors of the day and start comparing. I once had a prune soda that reminded me of the flavor of drPepper but it's been a long time since I have had a drPepper and at this point I'm sure the flavors in it are mostly artificial in origin.
