Would it be possible to build a little super miniature server, maybe using an SD card for hard-drive, and then take that little server and hide it in a place that offers free wi-fi (in the toilets of Subway for example)? I like the idea of this, but really doubt it's possible unfortunately. I want co-location but it's so fucking expensive.

Why don't you just ask a friend if it's cool to keep a small/low-power computer at his/her house? I guess it depends on what you're trying to do though. If it's anything that would require a significant amout of power/bandwidth, your friend might not go for it, or may want some compensation, but compensating a friend is still probably much cheaper than paying a company for colocation. This is still only a good idea if what you're doing is very basic. What do you want colocation for?

You gonna climb into the subway bathroom ceiling and hide a netbook in there, hope you can find a power source, hope that no one finds it, and hope you never have any problems requiring you to go back to said subway, climb into the ceiling and fix it? Problem for a communications engineer is trivial because there are multiple easy ways to solve a problem of this kind.
A: To start think NOT server & instead think Output audio/video to outside world
1: Start by making it EASY to solve
2: No need to reinvent the wheel
3: Plain yellow pad and make a drawing
4: Target inside of outhouse
5: Audio/Video
6: Off the shelf cheep or free hardware
7: The most basic cell phone found at swap meets with Wi Fi
8: The cheapest Cell account
9: Now comes the DYI part. Power source beyond internal battery
10:Little black plastic box with larger battery at edge of floor out of way or
11:Any Ham radio nerd knows how to "Steal" RF and convert it to DC as a power source
12: RF source stolen powers up the cell phone - RF source in a big city could be Wi Fi
13: RF source could be a local Radio or TV station
14: At night one could put a ladder up on outhouse roof and install solar panel
15: Now output of Cell goes to a computer connected to DSL or Cable and most ISP's offer a basic Static IP charge.
16: Any computer with fixed IP becomes a server
17: Yes you could output directly to the Wi Fi & anyone who has tried Star Bucks for example knows that Video gets choppy depending on number of Wi Fi users. Big Urban City Wi Fi still STINKS

34 Yes its 34 Engineers n Science types and PhD Math geeks all working in theory for me to get a brand new GEO with HD and that does not mean Hard Drive - get it up and working to replace one just a few yards away - and WE are not one bit closer to the goal then WE were 24 hours ago.

Yes.
It entirely depends on what you want to do though, and it won't be as mini as you want it to be. There are mini computers the size of an USB drive, though (Slightly bigger). However not with wifi, but wired. Wired is better for servers regardless.
You'd also have to open ports in their router to point to your device, or put it in the DMZ.
