Topic: Does anyone here believe in Karma?

My mother believes in Karma. She usually relates 2 non-correlated/unrelated events (1 being a good event, the other being a bad event) and uses that as cause and effect. "You did [...] and that is why your step father bumped into another car!". When I ask her why someone else is being punished for my wrong doing she claims the karma comes into our household because I live under the same roof. I try to reason with her that karma is just a moral causation but she also believes in God so it usually burns off into a realization that her beliefs will never change, and vice versa. (I mention God because she believes that karma is controlled by God.)

There's no mystical or cosmic force involved in this. If good actions make good things happen to you, and bad actions make bad things happen to you, then why do so many people who commit atrocities go so long with good fortune? Or people that devote their lives to good have bad things happen?

Why was the Ratko Mladic only just caught for the genocide he orchestrated, whilst Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for opposing apartheid? That's certainly doesn't seem like a 'Karmic' outcome.

No. I believe that doing good should be a self-less act, because as humans we can only progress as a society by performing good things. The reward is knowing you did a good thing; it is not the reward of being given some kind of special treatment by a cosmic force. I think that if everyone had this opinion, then 'rewards' come naturally from this aspect. Bad people will always exist in our imperfect world, but I also think good things come to good people for the most part. :)

Kind of. If you do shitty things, shitty things are more likely to happen to you. Commit a crime, go to jail, steal something, get beat up etc.

That's not the same as Karma as in the mystical "force".

For me doing good things makes me feel good about myself, I like seeing other people happy. That in itself is a reward of sorts. And likewise I feel guilty when I know I've done something wrong.

But is that due to some cosmic law, or merely due to the environment one who does shitty things is in?

Like, does a person who robs a bank get beat up by a gang member because cosmic law willed it to be, or did he get beat up because he hung around in gang-prone territory/associated with criminals/robbed a fucking bank?

I agree. Its kinda the same thing though, or at least partially related somehow (maybe lol). I don't believe in anything "mystical" or none of that shit, but bad things happen to bad people more than they do good people.
