He never did explain how he chose such an ugly horrid industrial city. So many choices on quality places to live and work. Kunming cannot be found on any lists of a city to visit and I looked at the top 1000 city lists in China.

No I didn't - Multiple Ex-Pat 4ums - Most of the topics are not whining. Pay and working conditions and the horrid quality of Food in Kunming - Many of those Ex-Pats are in relationships long term and are stuck because the wives or GF's want to be close to home and family.
And there are Happy Ex-Pats but of course in other cities in China.

There are definitely cons to living here. The job market for foreigners still isn't so hot, mainly consisting of teaching jobs. The city itself isn't exactly a paragon of beauty. Traffic is a mess. And if you're coming down from a first tier city, you will miss a lot of the Western creature comforts (most of which can be remedied on Taobao anyway). It would also be unfair not to mention the rain season--it rains for most of the summer, sometimes non-stop for a week at a time.

Of course the food wood be safer and although there may be rats in LA they are not collected for food and sold to people like you - U have to go to China for that and of course watch out for anything fried or that has any oil in it

Like any large city (7 million people in greater Kunming), there is traffic congestion, people congestion, and pollution. Those are really the only things I ever experienced there that were less than wonderful.
