gotta have the wind at your back. there's a flag on the helm that helps show direcrion. turn your ship till the flag points forward. the more at your back the wind is the faster you'll go. to head upwind you need to tack, which is zig-zagging. with some practice you'll know when to zig and when to zag.

yeah, the falling off your ship on login is a bug afaik. best to logout with stuff stowed in ship storage. there's also a spawner you can put on your ship. place it and hold right click on it to set home.

Ok I fixed it and played for a bit. I dont understand anything. There's no tutorial. I ran around the island for a bit and collected resources but have no idea what to do with them. Then i saw an animal and went to see it up close and it killed me and I lost my entire inventory. Then I ragequit. What the fuck is this game? THanks.

lol. it's a sandbox. there's not really a tutorial, but you need to know how to build.
check out this quick walkthrough and you'll see how to quick start.

basically you open your crafting tab, collect materials for a ship dock and and assembler, build those things, place them, then use them to build a ship hull and ship parts. to build a ship doc you first need to spend your first knowledge points in the skill tree to unlock the assembler and ship doc schematics. you can also craft bullets, weapons and a few other items by hand, everything else needs the assembler/ship dock combo to manufacture and place parts onto the ship.
this 11 minute video shows you what it looks like to use the ship dock and the assembler to manufacture parts. it's kinda out of date, but it's all basically the same. he skips the early steps of unlocking the ship dock, building it and placing it. the video starts as his just placed ship dock spawns and goes from there.
