I downloaded a tutorial by Kevin Skoglund which was extremely useful, and use a mixture of tutorials and books. I was just wondering if r04r, AC, etc used the same technique to learn, as I see them as successful in what they do.

I don't know if you've ever been to college, but you can study a lot more than just your major. In fact, it's required. Some people even pick up these things called minors or even take up other majors. Some people even take classes that aren't required, for that whole learning and experience thing.

Work I do for Satellites demands a degree for insurance reasons. There are a number of famous engineers sans degrees. There was a time I wanted no part of a degree because I developed such a poor respect for the engineers I knew, and I was too young to understand why they could never answer my technical questions as a kiddlet.

Dad taught me a lot of stuff quite a few years back, then internet, and this year attending college but so far i know most stuff already. Next year should be better.

I already have an okay understanding of HTML and CSS, but the more I read about JS, PHP, MySQL and ASP the more daunting they all seem. I'm not looking to create anything complex, but I want to be capable, I want to come out of it with the ability to create fully-functional sites.
I know at least I'll need HTML, CSS, PHP and MySQL, is there anything else I'd need to know? I want to be r04r-level. :P

I learned PHP in a week (I spent several hours a day doing some very intensive and motivated learning). You have to love the language and have or develop a genuine desire to understand how software works. For me, it was between semesters, I had nothing else to do, and it was really, really fun making my own websites.
You don't need to take classes, especially not for web design languages, though it does help you develop good programming habits and avoid bad ones. The classes tend to move slowly, however, so you need to be patient and willing to trudge through some boring concepts.
Edit: Also, I recommend a free editor or, if you want something nice with a lot of features, PHPed while you learn. Learning PHP using notepad is downright masochistic.

Of course I have my Prejudice's re telecommunications, yet San Diego is a huge Bio Science community and the same skill sets are necessary for programmers.
Skills as in English are not all that fancied LoL because so few Americans have the necessary math skills so this area is loaded loaded with people from any place OTHER then USA

1999: cable modem at home; Excite provided 10 MB of web storage so I built some simple web pages with Frontpage and then modified the HTML code through copypasta and tutorials; took a class in which we built hundreds of commodity Windows boxes
2000: first experiments with CSS
2001: started to see the value of a CMS; had a lot of friends who used Blogger, Pitas, and LiveJournal
2002: started experiments with PHP and flat file databases (did it to impress a girl; we then dated for three years); helped mentoring organization go paperless (saved $6000 a year) by making a basic CMS as my volunteer participation
2003: built a CMS for friends to use; learned how to make valid HTML and CSS
2004: rewrote the mentoring CMS for $1000 and helped them maintain it for three years
2005: started working with the OSU library as a graphic designer for the administration’s IT group; did a lot of web design

It depends on what you want to do. If you want to run a site, steal a copy of ATBBS 1.0 from OverTalk or Futallaby from 1chan. Then it's all trial and error. If you want to write applications, do it from scratch.

Thanks guys. I'm reading all sorts of tutorials which are really helpful, but I don't really have anything in mind I want to make as of yet. Maybe if I thought of some project, something for me to create, and set out to accomplish that I'd learn better. I need to put what I've learned to use. >_>

I've been learning HTML and CSS for a while, which has been really easy. I still have some things I need to learn though.
I want to start with JavaScript and PHP next, and I've already downloaded a ton of PHP tutorials and videos which I need to put to use.

One interesting path into the industry is helping community groups and small businesses build simple websites. I did a lot of WordPress installs between 2006 and 2009, before I started maintaining Ruby apps.
WordPress was useful as a CMS and I had to learn integration methods for plugins and some parsing tools for XML and APIs. I also learned a bit about publishing, as the process to (consistently) integrate sophisticated text and varying imagery is non-trivial.
Fixing, maintaining and improving sites can actually be a better learning experience than building from scratch. You are also exposed to less risk and scrutiny, that way.
