The plastic part of the pedal broke off, the metal spindle is intact so I was able to finish my Ten Myle bike ride 2day.

I think they broke because I have to stand on the pedals to get enough torque to get moving from a stop.

Duct taped the pedals back together and inflated the tires to 50psi (the maximum rated pressure according to the sidewall). I also took off the useless chain guard, saving half a pound.
