Ben Stirland slipped off his chair and swallowed the top from the pen he had been chewing. Emergency crews were called to his home in Consett, County Durham, and took him to hospital but he died two days later.

Despite being seen as an extremely rare incident, the tragedy has prompted warnings about people chewing or sucking on pen tops.

Yeah but if he slipped off his chair whilst chewing on a sword he would have died even quicker.

It's figurative. Many millions have died because of the 'penned' words contained in, for example, The Communist Manifesto, Mao's Red Book, Mein Kampf, the 2nd Amendment, etc. Far more so than have died by sword.

Can you prove this?

Also that was a pen cap, not a pen you retard.

@796,437 (C)
Violent people use words to justify their violence. Doesn't matter if it's Mein Kampf or the Communist Manifest or the Bible. It's a post hoc rationalization that people use to avoid taking responsibility for their actions.

Why insult me for pulling up a news story about death by pen just because it was the lowly cap?

Why would he die sooner if he fell on his sword. The sword may have passed into just his calf muscle. Only a minor wound. Or cut off his little toe.

You asked for an explanation of the aphorism dude. You've received it. If you just wanted an excuse to start prattling on about whatever's bothering you, knock yourself out

The sword would have gone through the back of his neck, severing the spinal cord and causing death in minutes.

> by pen just because it was the lowly cap?
Because a cap is not a pen.

Colin Capp 23, at Cardiff by the sea, died after his mate stabbed him in the neck 100 times with a ballpoint pen, a murder trial has been told.

Colin Capp, 23, attacked Darren Thomas, 45, while he slept in their abode.

Cardiff Crown Court heard he wrapped a plastic bag around his head and stabbed him repeatedly in the neck with a pen.

Mr Capp, from Scotland, admits killing his mate - but denies murder claiming "diminished responsibility".

Prosecutor Peter Rouch QC said: "Darren Thomas had around 100 puncture marks to the left side of his neck.

"He died from sustained application of significant pressure to the neck - his death was caused by strangulation, suffocation or both.

"It's abundantly clear that Mr Capp intended to kill Darren Thomas.

"He understood what he was doing and his ability to exercise self control was not substantially impaired."
Murder denied

Having a plastic bag tied around his neck killed him, not the pen.
