interesting that he speaks of the older generation as being the hairy guys...bringing about the realization on our part that conditions were such in that era that although they were in the forefront of civilization...at that time...they still faced certain death by the time they were in their late twenties or early thirties...for the most part..

That average age is a misconception, it doesn't account for factors like childhood mortality.
Romans who reached the age of 10 would om average live to their 40s or 50s. Romans who lived into their 60s would on average survive into their 70s. There are Romans who survived past 100.
