From his TED Talk.
Texting has long been bemoaned as the downfall of the written word, “penmanship for illiterates,” as one critic called it. To which the proper response is LOL. Textingisn’t writing at all — it’s actually more akin to spoken language. And it’s a “spoken” language that is getting richer and more complex by the year.
Texting is developing its own kind of grammar.
Worldwide people speak differently from the way they write, and texting — quick, casual and only intended to be read once — is actually a way of talking with your fingers.
Texting, far from being a scourge, is a work in progress.
Look at some of the ways beauty used to be spelled: bealte, buute, beuaute, bewtee, bewte, beaute, beaultye.
Can anyone here justify beauty? The Cockneys close to Svet wood never need the "U" and wot is rong with Bewtee - for texting Bewte saves tyme fingers n bandwidth/$$
That article starts with
How English spelling ever got so messed up.
bottoms out with how Spelling got fucked cause of French which article says is a good thing cause we get gnocchi pasta from dem neabors
> Some people in linguistics are full of shit though > > they get some idea and it's their pet and they show everyone their pet but it's a shitbird
No shit - Linguistic and Language teachers are mostly mad as fuck over how texting and language translator apps has made their unimportant teaching "specificity" Not so much so important anymore
