The guy joins a religion which is infamous for crimes against humanity. The founder of that church failed to figure out a betrayer among his merry men.
I am not defending what the church members did but I sure don't think he was very smart in his choice of a religion to join and people to hang with.

That got me to look at fairy tales still in use and very old

Beauty and the Beast and Rumpelstiltskin appear to have been created some 4000 years ago.
