The advancement of car technology might be an answer to this. There's cars nowadays that can sense if they're about to hit someone and will automatically brake.
Of course, it'll take time to perfect that technology and get it into every motor vehicle.
@789,015 (Meta)
I'm not sure what you're intending with that image, but I do think it's worth noting that Islamic extremism thrives on disillusionment and resentment. So sweeping, hamfisted anti-Muslim policies like the travel ban would just create more potential recruits for Daesh.
I do disapprove of Islam (as well as most religions), but I think it's a complex problem for which simple solutions ultimately won't work.

That would have to not only be implemented on all new cars but also retrofitted to all old cars as well. Not insurmountable but a hell of a challenge.
> I'm not sure what you're intending with that image, but I do think it's worth noting that Islamic extremism thrives on disillusionment and resentment
A while back Trump said something about what happened "last night in Sweden" while talking about Muslim immigration and everyone (including the Swedish government) said he was crazy and they had no idea what he was talking about and then a while later there was a terror attack in Stockholm. This was blamed (unironically) on Trump having criticized Swedish Muslims.

inb4 "if you dont let them in terrorists win", "if we save even one "refugee" while letting terrorists in that bomb our own people it's worth" it etc. etc.
You need a reality check when it comes to the Muslim religion. You all blame our intolerance, white patriarchy and what not for the terrorist attacks, while ignoring that the Quran itself says that those who wage deadly jihad against their enemies (and enemies here is "everyone not muslim") will be rewarded a blissful eternity in the afterlife.
Roughly 20% of muslims agree with the bombings across europe. If you consider there are 1.5B of the on the planet, we're not talking about a few radicals that appreciate the suicide bombings etc...
Not so nice numbers to motivate someone to take in 2M+ of them per year into EU... I'm a gambler by nature, but even I wouldnt bet on these odds.
Poland did a great job at protecting its own people, 0 dead by terrorists. Label them as racist as you want, but the feeling of chilling in Poland at 4 AM during the weekends, is so much better than being a paranoid fuck avoiding "problematic neighborhoods" while doing the same in Hamburg.

It is interesting... On the one hand, honestly, I see her point. These guys are using the internet to reach disillusioned young Muslims (though not solely). On the other, there's the very valid points about a slippery slope on privacy and how feasible policing the internet really is.
But still, I like the general gist of Theresa's message. She recognises that we need to target extremism and the guys spreading it, and she's obviously looking at a lot of ways to do that. It gives me confidence.

You're right, sorry. Here is my completely original summary of the Freddo bar:
Freddo (originally Freddo Frog) is a brand of chocolate bar shaped like a cartoon frog, standing up and wearing clothes. It was originally manufactured by MacRobertson's, an Australian confectionery company, but is now produced by Cadbury, a British firm.
The product was invented in 1930 by Harry Melbourne, an 18-year-old MacRobertson's employee.[1] In 1967, MacRobertson's was sold to Cadbury, which incorporated Freddo Frogs into its own product range.[2] The chocolate was originally sold only in Australia, but has been introduced into several other markets.

Here's one idea. Wear a stab (and bullet) resistant vest to cover your torso. this one's available for $230. They make also make these cut resistant gloves for chefs, butchers, and people who use knives. If you could get an undershirt made out of the same material to protect your arms from slashing attacks, maybe in the form of a turtleneck to protect the neck too. That would just leave the face and hands vulnerable. Of course you could wear the aforementioned gloves too, and perhaps with the knowledge your hands and arms are protected it would be easier to use them to block a facial knife attack. Safety glasses to protect the eyes wouldn't be a bad idea either. Some of the nicer safety glasses actually look pretty good.
Of course this wouldn't do much against a vehicular attack. I guess a culture of situational awareness will need to develop where if you're on foot you'll have to look and try to scope out where a vehicular attack could come from and try to keep to safe (from vehicles) areas.
Meta (OP) double-posted this 9 years ago, 9 minutes later, 2 days after the original post[^][v]#789,548
I also find it odd that pedestrian and vehicular traffic was not already separated on London Bridge. On pretty much all of our major bridges, pedestrians and cars are kept separate by barriers.
Anonymous M replied with this 9 years ago, 2 hours later, 2 days after the original post[^][v]#789,552
The thing you have to keep in mind about London Bridge in particular is that there has been one for over 2,000 years. The current one was rebuilt in the 70s and I would say that the open design came from a desire to stay faithful to the traditional layout of the bridge. Tower Bridge has barriers.
Remember hindsight is 20/20. Nobody anticipated, even post-9/11, that we would be facing guerilla warfare in our own homeland. Especially not in the 1970s when the bridge was designed!
I agree that they should be added now to prevent this happening again, but at the end of the day it's not a real solution. You can't ensure that nobody can drive a car into a crowd throughout the entire UK and even if you could, they would switch tactics. We need to be active, not reactive. The most important thing of all is that we attack the root of the problem itself - a subculture of violence, hate and disillusionment with our country.
The people who did these atrocities were British. They had the opportunity to become fine young men, but something went very wrong in their development. It's our duty to put an end to it and there's no way to do that except by ensuring that this fifth column loses support.

Tower Bridge has barriers. > > Remember hindsight is 20/20. Nobody anticipated, even post-9/11, that we would be facing guerilla warfare in our own homeland. Especially not in the 1970s when the bridge was designed!
Quite right! But most of these bridges had some sort of barrier in place long before terrorism was a factor. I've been doing some research and London Bridge had a metal guardrail separating pedestrians from traffic in this 1987 photo. I can't figure out when it was taken down but there was one in 1987.
Of course. I went on Google street view and took a virtual "drive" down the A3 and Borough High Street just off the bridge and they certainly wouldn't have had to drive far to commit a similar atrocity. > The people who did these atrocities were British. They had the opportunity to become fine young men, but something went very wrong in their development. It's our duty to put an end to it and there's no way to do that except by ensuring that this fifth column loses support.
I think Trump calling them losers is a good start.
I don't think they were British. Perhaps their birth certificate was British but I don't think the men were. I think they saw themselves at war with Britain, allied with ISIS. I don't mean that they weren't British because of their ethnicity, but I don't think they saw themselves as British.

Also the previous London Bridge had a guardrail in 1968.
Whoever is in charge of London Bridge made a decision to remove the barrier at some point between 1987 and the present. It's not something where no one could have foreseen the danger -- the bridge had a barrier 30 years ago and 49 years ago long before terrorism would have been a factor.

You touch on an interesting point there. I think we're seeing the waning days of the nation-state. Global communications makes borders irrelevant.

I think what Anonymous M was getting at was that they were British by citizenship. So, under normal circumstances, they could've become good Brits. But their radicalisation prevented that.
One of them was an avid Arsenal fan, even. Under better circumstances, that guy might've just been a typical English football fan.

It's interesting to me that, in these last three attacks, the attackers have been identified as "peripheral figures". The intelligence services knew about them, but didn't see them as the biggest threats and prioritised accordingly.
It makes me wonder if these networks are able to guess who's a major figure under constant surveillance and who's a peripheral figure who can move more freely, and are taking advantage of that. It seems that the authorities need a new approach to address this.

What is a Briton anyway? Like, I could move there and apply for citizenship but could I ever become British? I already speak English and I'm a huge fan of several British TV series so the accents, spelling, and whatnot wouldn't be a barrier. I could probably even manage driving on the wrong side of the road. But in my heart of hearts I would know I'm not British and never will be. My kids may be British, but not me.
I wonder because, because from birth until age 16, I grew up in Colorado and then at age 16 moved to Texas. Now, 12 years later I'm not a Texan. I live in Texas, my driver's license says "Texas" on it but I'm not a Texan and never will be. I'm someone who just happens to live in Texas. I have no deep attachment to Texas or it's culture. My family and I moved for economic reasons and if, say, Louisiana offered opportunities I'd go there instead.
This intra-country move is of course tiny compared to moving to the UK from the USA and I imagine going from Pakistan to the UK would be even greater still.
Now of course I'm not going to strap on a suicide vest or run people down with a van because I come from a slightly different culture than the one I live in now but I think this lack of identity, of belonging is a large part of it. It's not enough, on it's own, to cause terrorism but to someone who's already mentally unwell it could be enough to push them over the edge.

@previous (Meta) > What is a Briton anyway?
I think that's something that would really depend on who you ask. Maybe you would never feel British even if you lived here for like 15 years, but similar person might. Maybe some of my countrymen would agree that'd you could never be "truly" British, but others might take a more relaxed view.
In this context, for me, the most important barometer is that a person feels enough a part of a culture that radicalisers cannot make them despise it and become terrorists. This is why the Arsenal guy stood out for me, because he was already enjoying a quintessential part of British culture. Maybe he wasn't so far from being integrated enough to be vulnerable?
I suppose what's needed is some sort of long-term strategy to make Muslims feel more welcome in and more a part of the UK. Or a more specific targeting of Muslims who seem at risk of going down that path. I'm unsure exactly how that could be done, but I image a lot of groundwork could be laid in schools and community initiatives. Shrinking the pool of potential recruits is essential, I feel.

How about bringing in 1000 Syrians and giving them the job of watching those in the terror watch list. They will blend in and speak the language.

I was thinking and my hypothesis doesn't account for why the terrorism is disproportionately Muslim. Presumably first and second generation Hindu and Sikh immigrants should feel a similar lack of belonging but they don't seem to radicalize to the same extent. I've never heard of a radical Hindu terrorist.
> Maybe some of my countrymen would agree that'd you could never be "truly" British, but others might take a more relaxed view.
For me it would be more of an internal issue, not external validation. Like it wouldn't matter if the Queen herself took me to Windsor Castle and draped me in the Union Jack and proclaimed me the most British Englishman since King Arthur. I still would not be a real Briton and I would know it.
Again this wouldn't even remotely make me want to be a terrorist. I'd be aware that while I was a stranger in a strange land, that I was in one of the nicer countries in the world and try not to mess things up. When in Rome, do as the Romans do to the best of my ability.
Especially considering these men had left their homelands and come the UK voluntarily. No one was stopping them from returning to Pakistan or Morocco if they wanted to live in an Islamic country.
> I suppose what's needed is some sort of long-term strategy to make Muslims feel more welcome in and more a part of the UK.
I don't know what more could be done. Britain has rolled out the red carpet for Muslims. I mean London even has a Muslim mayor. I guess point out that Christianity is a relatively recent thing for Britain and that the real British religions are long gone so if you think about it Islam is really no more foreign than Christianity.

@previous (Meta) > I was thinking and my hypothesis doesn't account for why the terrorism is disproportionately Muslim.
I guess it's largely because Islam does have a radical, actively militant sect promoting itself and sending out agents. Obviously we don't have any radical Hindu sects out there trying to form a breakaway, ultra-religious state.
> I don't know what more could be done. Something can probably be done, since the terrorists are apparently finding ample recruits. I'm not really an expert so I can only offer vague ideas, but I do think Theresa May is on the right track in saying we should be going after the networks that promote radicalisation.
> No one was stopping them from returning to Pakistan or Morocco if they wanted to live in an Islamic country.
Could be they have family or work over here. Like you said, something made them move in the first place. And I guess that when they're radicalised, they feel they can do "more good" over here, whether that he spreading their ideology or launching attacks.
> the real British religions are long gone
Maybe for the better. I read that they used to throw swords into lakes to appease their gods. Stonehenge is pretty awesome, though.

One of the killed terrorist suspects was previously charged with planning a terrorist attack
A spokesman for the force said: "Employees of an office in Southwark Street were inadvertently allowed back into their office this morning before the routine process of searching premises within the cordons had been completed.
"This is part of the work towards reducing the area of the existing cordons within the area.
"The individuals in the building were asked to leave so that these searches could be undertaken.
"Those affected fully cooperated without incident and were advised they will be allowed to return as soon as is practicable.
"We would like to thank members of the public again for their patience and understanding while we complete the necessary processes."
