Topic: Helen of Troy

Anonymous A started this discussion 9 years ago #62,842

Helen of Troy had the face that could launch a thousand ships, but it was not because she was so beautiful. Rather, it was because her head was literally shaped like a Champagne bottle. Discuss.

Guess that explains why achilles liked her so much

i read once that people were uglier back then, and that Helen of Troy would probably have been pretty average by today's standard. your random girl next door has a better than average chance of being equally as beautiful, if not more beautiful than the face that launched a thousand ships. it's probably a pretty subjective topic anyway, but the idea goes like this: since helen of troy's time we've had 2500 years of selective breeding happening, and the "traits of beauty" have been being reinforced long enough since then that many of those attributes are now very common. plus we're much healthier now and healthy is beautiful, so not only do more people have more beautiful traits but more people have access to clean food and have time to stay fit.

so, go look in the mirror, chances are if you lived 2,500 years ago wars could have been waged over your beauty.

You talk like standards of beauty are a static thing.

it's probably a pretty subjective topic anyway... plus, like i said, it's wasn't my idea, just something i read once. there'd be no way to measure or prove that, like you say, beauty isn't a static thing, i think it was more a point being made about how old standards of beauty get incorporated into our genome because we select for beauty, and traits that set ancient beautiful people apart are now just pretty common.

I was just musing that late bronze age Mediterranean peoples would probably regard an Angelina Jolie or a Katy Perry as some freakish albino giantess.

but with all the bronze ages most beautiful features exaggerated beyond anything human. i think in 2500 years everyone is going to look like an anime character with huge eyes, gigantic tits, weaboo hair and hips as wide as a horse. but i bet if a weaboo time traveler came back to today a significant portion of the population would worship them as a beautiful goddess.

Well, yes. Because an increasing number of the population already worship the 2D versions of these potential future humans.
