Topic: Yesterday I met a gay Uber driver who voted for Trump

beckyderp !yDoooooooo started this discussion 9 years ago #62,813

He regrets his vote a lot!

He thought Trump maybe might hire some reasonable people to work in his administration, but says that everything has been a disaster since Inauguration.

Idk how any gay person could vote for a ticket with Mike Pence on it.

Why? Because of the Paris thing?

If you read Art of the Deal this is a classic Trump negotiation tactic. You can't be afraid to walk away from the table.

Everything he does is "a classic Trump negotiation tactic" to justify his idiocy. Hey! Trump just raped, murdered, and ate a baby on live TV! Oh, that's just a classic Trump negotiation tactic. You must listen to Rush alot, Meta.

re: everything has been a disaster since Inauguration. it's like you trump supporters have selective hearing, all you can hear is the dissatisfaction but when it comes to hearing the reasons it's like we're suddenly speaking greek. "i just don't understand the trump hate," i mean come the fuck on dude.

Okay how is your life actually worse since January 20?

You're angling to move the goalposts there - an individuals quality of life is meaningless in the larger scheme of things.

That is hardly an accurate or fair measure. Hey, Jewish German? Is your life better or worse since January 20, 1939? Oh, no difference? Then see? Hitler is good.

well, for one the economy is slipping and we're already feeling it at work. our type of operation is sensitive to economic winds because we're contract r&d and prototyping and outsource manufacturing so when other businesses are doing well we do well, but when businesses belt tighten and bring more stuff in house then we're left out in the cold. our bread and butter, which are basically service contracts to maintain equipment we've installed or been contracted to maintain will keep us in business, but we're already seeing growth slow down. and a new web venture is now stalled because we lack resources and integration is taking fucking forever, but, we can't really hire anyone atm and after this last may i'm not sure we'll expand at all this year. things had been improving, but now finding new clients and new prototyping work has gotten to be challenging. since jan 20.

and i think i've mentioned before that we have a heavy reliance on german manufacturing and we buy a lot of parts from germany, and that as long as trump didn't fuck up trade relations with germany, specifically, then we'd more than likely weather his administration just fine. and now look at what he's done...

and that's not to mention the actual work environment, where being a liberal is a taint. and now the most fervent trump supporters in the office are just dicks, like, they're pissed off all the time. somehow they've got it in their minds that there's some kind of anti-american liberal antifa media protester cabal to smear the president for ratings and money and that i'm somehow complict because i'm a liberal and still support democrats and that means i'm "okay with" (insert fakenews) liberal activism to silence christian conservatives and the murder of seth rich and what the fuck ever else.

i have to pretend to not even care about politics anymore and not pay attention to it and not know anything about anything that anyone is talking about so they can just spew their parroted fox news talking points until i find some distraction to get out of the conversation. i'm just waiting the story out, they're all running around, like, shilling for trump, it's crazy, every day they're going around trying to normalize whatever happened yesterday, then bam, trump does something indefensibly stupid and they all shut the fuck up for an afternoon until they can watch hannity and find out what they need to parrot to normalize it in the morning.

so, business seems to be slowing down, trade with our biggest suppliers could potentially be impacted, and a persistent hostile work environment.
ask me again in three months and i'll let you know if there's any impact on our cost of goods.

Buggering hell, Meta, do you think a politician needs to be negatively affecting your life before you can disapprove of them? You don't have to be personally affected to know that pulling out of the Paris agreement is a bad idea, or that that Trump's lies about vote rigging undermine democratic stability.

I mean, I could flip that back on you. What has Trump done to measurably improve your life? I'm guessing not much has changed for you, yet you still approve of and defend him.

@previous (squeegee)
I'm glad that here in the UK, most people can see what a disaster he is and talk openly about it.

My condolences for having to deal with political disagreements at work. That sounds awful.

This is actually how libertarians think! All that matters is what's good for the individual.

Actually, all each Libertarian cares about is what is good for HIM. Libertarians do not care about other people at all.

I'm sorry to hear that, Squeegee. I personally think politics and religion should be kept out of the workplace and I do my best to that in real life.

We've had quite a downturn in Houston now for the past two years because of the oil glut.

@788,750 (Killer Lettuce? !!iNo3FkiZx)
> Buggering hell, Meta, do you think a politician needs to be negatively affecting your life before you can disapprove of them?
Of course not. I was just curious to see what the individual impact of Trump is.
> You don't have to be personally affected to know that pulling out of the Paris agreement is a bad idea, or that that Trump's lies about vote rigging undermine democratic stability.
US CO2 emissions per capita have been declining for 40 years now and I don't why that would stop because of Paris. Even so just because a country agrees to something doesn't mean they'll actually follow through (like every NATO country except the US,UK, Greece, Poland, and Estonia).
> I mean, I could flip that back on you. What has Trump done to measurably improve your life? I'm guessing not much has changed for you, yet you still approve of and defend him.
Nothing ?. If I went into a coma on Jan 20 and woke up today I would not be able to tell anything has changed.

Not exactly. The concern is that Theresa isn't calling him out enough on the shit he says and does.

I empathise with her, though. She does need to keep good relations with him, especially considering the upcoming post-Brexit trade deals.

I'm still somewhat confused. Are they implying she's a Trump puppet (like how Blair was for George W Bush)?

It seems strange that she'd be expected to "handle" the president of the UKs closest ally.

Killer Lettuce? !!iNo3FkiZx replied with this 9 years ago, 4 minutes later, 5 hours after the original post[^] [v] #788,792

@previous (Meta)
I don't think the implication is that she's a puppet, just that she's not condemning Trump much (if at all) when he does objectionable things. This reaction is understandable, as Trump is very unpopular over here. Once I even saw the Daily Mail running an attack headline on him for sexism.

But, as I said, I understand why she takes that approach. Right now, it's important to maintain good relations.

That, and if she did try to condemn every bad thing Trump said it would consume literally all of her time and energy. I read an article about that, that if you say one or two bad things it becomes a major problem but if you say bad things constantly it overwhelms people's capacity for outrage and they begin to tune it out.

Of course America does that too. I remember Russia was heavily criticized for having somewhat restrictive LGBT rights but we've never criticized Saudi Arabia for applying the death penalty for homosexuality.

The left won't critize Arab Muslim countries that opress women and have terrible human rights records. Because it's mean, or something. USAmerican feminists are pretty comfortable ignoring women's rights if they're Muslim women not in America

i haven't seen anybody deny any of that. but when i see conservatives bring up women's rights abroad it seems to be part of a "you could have it worse" kind of narrative they use to silence women/feminists at home or to just shit on Islam in general

From what I've seen it's more of a No True Scotsman thing. If a Muslim does something bad they weren't a real Muslim or they weren't really following the true teaching of the Koran or something.
