- when in post-secondary education you have little time for pleasure-reading. i never got to read a book for fun during the last academic year.
- i don't understand why long-form articles don't count as a form of literature? most are the length of short stories
- as the article acknowledges, there is more competition with non-print media
- americans in general are working more than they used to and not being paid accordingly, leading to people having little time or energy for pleasure

Lame excuses. Intelligent, educated, civilised people read books, and they find the time to do it.

This. If I read several >1000 word articles per day why shouldn't it be counted the same as reading several chapters of a book?

I read ten to twenty thousand words a day during the week, more if I have more leisure time. Why do you cling to books and reading as a status symbol?

yeah, no. if you read enough for school or work, you don't want to read for pleasure. source: read... multiple books a week for school and not a single book for fun this semester. it kinda sucked.

Just read the Cliff Notes and/or watch the movie ?
The secret is to just make the first and last paragraphs really good. The teacher has like a million papers to grade so they just skim.

The title is ambiguous. Is it that most Americans HAVE never READ (red) a book? Or, perhaps, is it that most Americans have read a book but they never read (reed) anymore?
I would click the link to find out but it's fake news.
