Topic: Where do you start with Morrowind?

Catherine !TGirlYJKXM started this discussion 9 years ago #62,725

I always wanted to play this game yet I always feel lost in the starting town. This game definitely doesn't hold your hand so how do you know you've beaten it?

How to start with morrowind

1- pick a direction
2- walk in it

Fun fact your character is actually lost in the starting town. They're a prisoner transported at the order of the emperor with no real explanation given to them.

I would first suggest you talk to everyone in town to do some mini quests and get a feel for the mechanics of the game, how stores work etc.

Then when you're comfortable playing you can get on the giant bug thing you can see near the exit to town and go to the capital city.

PS you'll know when you've beaten it

I want to get into Morrowind because it is less structured where as Skyrim feels like the opposite in that it's more restricted. I just never know where to begin in Morrowind once I get off the boat.

What do you recommend for blocking? Since it's a state and not something that you right click to do. I did a quest for someone in town where I have to goto a nearby cave and I got owned because they hit me in two strikes.

I don't remember how to play morrowind, but one thing you should prepare for is that the combat is math based.

When you swing a sword you are rolling dice in the background, it's not entirely based on your skill as a player.

That seems a little pointless having those stats then. So they like don't increase the chances of nailing a hit?

Your character's skills do affect your chances of hitting, but your skill as a player has little to do with it... you could hit something dead on but the game could be like "no, you didn't actually hit that".

Yeah that cave is notorious for killing newbies, they're high level. Don't go there until you're stronger. Also watch out for those little dickhead flying things, they can swarm you if you're not careful.

So it is for advanced levels. I guess I have been indoctrined by Skyrim thinking more easier levels are near the starting position of the game.

I guess I am asking where I begin to beat the game. Also, does one actually have to complete all quests? I know Skyrim feels like you have no choice in not completing a quest as it gives you a bonus or advances the story. But Morrowind seems like the quests are just there for a different experience each time you play. Are you encouraged to accept every quest you are offered?

Skyrim has the Dragonborn quest as well as the Civil War quest. Aren't those the main story of the game? Does Morrowind have a main story like those?

Yeah a really cool one. Once you go to the Balmora it will begin. Take a silt strider.

If you look in your journal, you can see that you're meant to report to caius cossades there.

Don't you mean jump*? At least that's how I remember playing morrowind until acrobatics maxed out.
