TL;DR: a reporter asked a Republican candidate about the upcoming healthcare bill, and the candidate got angry and assaulted the reporter. The candidate was subsequently charged with assault.

The Guardian is an international organisation with a US branch. They have US reporters that cover US issues. A Guardian reporter being there isn't really unusual.
As for the cameras, I believe they were talking in some sort of a side room where the cameras wouldn't have necessarily been on.
What's the alternative here, anyway? Why would the Fox News reporters have lied to smear a candidate that they'd probably be otherwise supporting? Did the subsequent police investigation get it wrong too?

At that point, Gianforte grabbed Jacobs by the neck with both hands and slammed him into the ground behind him. Faith, Keith and I watched in disbelief as Gianforte then began punching the reporter. As Gianforte moved on top of Jacobs, he began yelling something to the effect of, "I'm sick and tired of this!"
Jacobs scrambled to his knees and said something about his glasses being broken. He asked Faith, Keith and myself for our names. In shock, we did not answer. Jacobs then said he wanted the police called and went to leave. Gianforte looked at the three of us and repeatedly apologized. At that point, I told him and Scanlon, who was now present, that we needed a moment. The men then left.

But I mean we're talking about a barren wasteland with a lower population density than Mars. And an election that most Americans don't know or care about. Why are you assuming the very thing I'm disputing? What if he really leans on the prosecutor to drop the case? What if the case is dropped for ostensibly plausible reasons and then the prosecutor gets some kind of promotion/job hops to a much better gig? What if he gets off with a slap on the wrist and no serious punishment? What if he threatens to use his considerable fortune to drag out the case for months/years and so it never goes to trial? These are all things that haven't happened yet, could happen, and would mean that he is above the law. There is a range of outcomes where i'd say he wasn't above the law, and a range of outcomes where I'd say he is above the law, but neither can come to fruition until the issue is actually starting to be litigated, or is shelved abruptly. It's just incredibly premature to say he got charged so he is going to be subject to the same legal process the rest of us non-millionaire/non-influential people are.

Ben Jacobs of The Guardian — walked into the room with a voice recorder, put it up to Gianforte's face and began asking if he had a response to the newly released Congressional Budget Office report on the American Health Care Act. Gianforte told him he would get to him later. Jacobs persisted with his question. Gianforte told him to talk to his press guy, Shane Scanlon.
...
To be clear, at no point did any of us who witnessed this assault see Jacobs show any form of physical aggression toward Gianforte
Going up to a guy uninvited and shoving a voice recorder in his face and not leaving him alone when he repeatedly asks you to go away is not "aggression".

That does not really make it okay. As the President he should, ideally, rise above that and want to uphold a free press. Instead he lets it get to him massively and constantly works to undermine the media.
I'm sure Theresa May doesn't like the Guardian constantly questioning her party, but she never feels the need to go out and tell people that the Guardian is fake news that people shouldn't listen to.

He's not just some random guy on Twitter... He's the President. And he is using his influence over American citizens to encourage distrust of the media. Yeah he's not outright banning the press, but he's doing the next best thing by spreading this idea of "fake news". He is worth $315 million. $50k to make a civil suit go away is peanuts. None of this changes the fact that he attacked a reporter, lied about it in a public press release, only admitted that he actually assaulted the reporter after Fox News reporters independently confirmed it, won the election anyway and then paid a measly sum to avoid costly and embarrassing litigation. Oh and by the way the sheriff investigating him donated $250 to his campaign. This is just a case of a rich dude breaking the law and buying his way out of any significant consequences.
