Topic: Urgent: Does anyone have a MLA template that includes a cover page?

キャサリン? !TGirlYJKXM started this discussion 9 years ago #61,895

I've tried to figure it out on my own, but most guides tend to not have a line count and instead, they give a damn measure. Others only include guides for basic MLA and not cover pages.

So what the fuck?

just use chicago thanks

also for cover pages i don't think there is an actual line count expectation, more just an estimate for how far down the page you'll be. line count depends on font, font size, page size, etc.

For a lot of my college papers you were required to use the style, font, spacing, margins, etc specified by the professor or the paper would be rejected or lose points. So if they said MLA you had to use MLA.

It has to be MLA. Also, how do I get the first page to say 1 in the header in LibreOffice Writer and nothing on the cover page?

For God's sake don't try to use LibreOffice if the professor is going to read it in Word. All kinds of tiny formatting things will get fucked up.

Your college may offer the full Office set for free on Office 365 for students but if not you can use a basic version of Word online free with a Microsoft (ie Hotmail/Live) account.

I don't have access to Microsoft Word at the moment since it expired. Also, this has to be printed and turned in.

Okay you're fine then if it's going to be printed.

https://office.live.com/start/Word.aspx <- web based version of Word if you have a Microsoft account.

@780,616 (Meta)
yeah but whenever it's been specified they specified chicago lol
also it's always been Times/12 or "normal font/size/margin"

@780,617 (キャサリン? !TGirlYJKXM)
if you have everything like that specified do not use libre-office
do you have to hand it in as a .doc/.docx file? if so use the live stuff meta just said
if not you can use libre-office or even google docs and save as pdf
although for the most part i've found that word is much better for academic writing than libre/open or google docs
use docs since it saves everything automatically (ie you can't lose it if something crashes) and then export to word and fix all the formatiing before handing it in
your school should offer software including microsoft office for free, check their (your school's) software licenses

On your title page: Format -> Title Page

It has to be printed and handed in also a lot of instructors here tend to favor Google Docs over Microsoft Word.

Why is this free? It looks exactly the same as the desktop app.

Because it's 1) ad-supported 2) Micro$oft wants you to click on their ads, not Googles

Once Google Docs got big, Micro$oft realized their strategy of getting people to fork over $150 to open a .docx was doomed. There was always OpenOffice of course but you had to be 1337 to know about it.

Set the punctuation to a larger font size, if you want to stretch out the page numbers discretely

Meta replied with this 9 years ago, 4 minutes later, 1 hour after the original post[^] [v] #780,633

Actually increasing the font spacing (thanks Becky!) is better because it's not as obvious.

Anonymous F replied with this 9 years ago, 7 minutes later, 1 hour after the original post[^] [v] #780,634

@previous (Meta)
Punctuation size is not obvious. But either way it doesn't help word count only page count. A couple of extra words to end a paragraph on the next line instead of near the end of a line is also worth it

in that case i've still found it better to use word for formatting purposes over google docs, which seems to lack some minor functionalities (don't ask me what, i've blocked everything out lol)

@previous (F)
i've only ever had word limits, not page limits. and that's with physical printed-out papers not electronically-submitted, as well.
