Theresa May has called a snap general election to be held on 8 June, despite repeatedly claiming she was against the idea of an early vote.
In a surprise statement outside Downing street, the prime minister said: “After the country voted to leave the EU, Britain needed certainty, stability and strong leadership. Since I became prime minister the government has delivered precisely that.”
She claimed Labour and the other opposition parties had opposed her. “The country is coming together but Westminster is not. Labour have threatened to vote against the final agreement we reach. The Lib Dems have said they want to grind the business of government to a standstill. Unelected members of the House of Lords have vowed to fight us every step of the way.”
May said she was laying down a motion in the House of Commons that will require two-thirds of MPs to back it.

I do want my Brexit, but I disagree a lot with some of the Tories more authoritarian policies such as the Digital Economy Bill, Psychoactive Substances Act and Investigatory Powers Act. I am hoping, albeit it's probably not going to happen, for another Tory/Lib Dem coalition. The Lib Dems will keep some of the Tories more draconian laws in check, but I doubt they will have much say over Brexit. I do not want a solely Tory government. Totally agreed on those Tory policies you mentioned. I'm very uncomfortable with them too. Although, I take some comfort in knowing that the Tories are definitely still a centre-right party willing to make progressive overtures, and not a far-right party. There are loads of job vacancies for construction, trades, service industry and even in theatre and corporate events. I think that anon makes a valid point, in that those unemployment numbers might be getting a boost from stuff like zero-hour contract and gig economy jobs like Deliveroo. And for some people, those kind of jobs are the only opportunities they have.
Granted, I'm not very knowledgable about jobs and the economy, so I won't try to add any more than that. But I do sense it's a valid point, to some extent.

Corbyn just can't win, m8. He's unpopular with the electorate, and is actively turning people off of Labour. Whether or not he's a good guy with good policies, the fact is that Labour is very unlikely to get into power with him in charge.
His successor could also be from the Labour left, so won't necessarily be a "Blairite". Whoever it is, I just hope they do a better job. The country needs a credible opposition especially now.

I know there are probably lots of policy and ideological differences between Labour and the Democrats, but they fill similar roles in their respective countries. So it felt odd to me when Squeegee said that Labour were like the US Libertarian Party, who are a perpetual "third man" and don't really impact much.
