Wrong. It is backed by the merchants that accept it, and by the currency exchances. If you have 100 Bitcoins right now, you can get $500 today at MtGOx, or many other currency exchanges. You can even get Euros, or Rubles or whatever.

No they aren't, and they havent been since the words "reserve note" was removed from the currency.

US dollars are backed by nothing but the trust that people have in their value.
