It's a dish (like a plate or something) that's hot. You heat the plate up by putting it in the oven for 10 minutes, then it warms up your food when you put the food on it.

It was traditional for the Yankees to prepare food this way during the Civil War. Cooking oven space was limited so they came upon the idea of heating the dish, not the food. By putting a stack of plates in the oven, a platoon of soldiers could be fed with only one or two wood burning stoves by using the dish to heat the cold food.
