Hey,
I have an ip camera system. When downloading playback video the NVR exports it as a .dat file. I then have to use a shady Chinese "player" to view the video. The player will not convert formats in anyway. Do you know of a good free program that I can use to convert a .dat video file to .avi, mpeg, etc? And I'm not looking for the free trial ones.

dat just means data and isn't much help sadly. what is the chinese "player"? have you tried opening the files with vlc?

The player is called nplayer
Vic does not give any errors it simply will not load the file.

Unfortunately it seems that the company which made your IP camera system - possibly a Chinese company operating in the West - has decided that their hardware will use a proprietary format that only their special player is able to play; the file itself is worthless without their approved software.
There should be some mechanism for making clips, if that helps.
Also unless you got it from a reputable company you probably have little Chinese fingers crawling all over your hard drive is all I'm saying

I purchased from gw security. I hear they are pretty reputable. I just see random Chinese characters in the player.

MediaCoder should do the trick.
But I can't say for sure since .dat isn't an actual format.

There's a chance the .dat file contains the encoded video along with other non-video metadata and other data used by the camera.
Try opening up one of the files in a hex editor, the use this page and see if you can locate a file signature for a video media type. At that point it's a case of trying to extract the video from the dat file.
