I just like the theme of something 'more' being out there, which is normally unobtainable and potentially not even understood. I don't mean it in a religious way; just something that would justify what might seem as an unhappy life to most. Pi and Trainspotting are the best examples I can think of at the moment. A few others:
A Scanner Darkly
The Matrix
Paprika; Inception (although I don't think these were well executed)
Waking life (although I prefer more of a story)
