1) ease of transport!
2) it's used often for altars which i think gives more of a sense of being "surrounded" by jesus/whatever religious figure
3) again religious significance of the number 3 - the father the son and the holy ghost
4) dramatic/narrative structure: represent a beginning, middle, and end, or the growth/decline or a subject
5) examine a subject from varying perspectives or with different techniques
6) because i am hecking cute and nice and sweet thanks
