It's supposed to be about 5% of us have trouble with reds versus greens but I can't find anyone who even knows anyone like this.

I have a red-green deficiency. I have a lot of trouble distinguishing secondary and tertiary colors from each another.

I was interested lately because I've been watching videos of people trying special glasses that filter a small range of wavelenths that both middle-range and long-range cones are sensitive to, and they are surprised as they see a wider variety hues than before. It is common for them to see purple for the first time and have to ask what it is, because before it would have just seemed to be a kind of blue.
Not all types of red/green defiency are helped, but the most common type is. With the most common type, people have good functioning cones of all three types, but two of them are too closely sensitive to similar ranges of wavelengths. By subtracting out some of the shared wavelengths in the middle, the different responses of the two similar cones become more important and give meaningful information to the visual system and hues can seem brighter and have more variety.

Hmm is interesting trying to describe a colour. Purple is what you get when you mix red and blue. It's much richer, and whereas blue or red alone can appear harsh to the eyes, purple is much softer.

There is another colour that's sort of like another but is really too different to pin it down -- magenta. It could be described as an obnoxious pink or a red that turned gay, but it doesn't really look red the way red is meant to look. It's interesting in that it is non-spectral (or extra-spectral), meaning that there is no wavelength of light that can make us perceive it.
