Topic: why don't people ever talk about voles

Sheila LaBoof started this discussion 9 years ago #60,464

They are very common and there isn't just one vole; there are about 155 described species of various sizes. Where are the vole stories in children's books? It's always mice and rats.

The word vole derives from earlier vole-mouse, from vole- (of Scandinavian origin; akin to Old Norse vǫllr field) + mouse; akin to Old English weald forestrlier vole-mouse, from vole- (of Scandinavian origin; akin to Old Norse vǫllr field) + mouse; akin to Old English weald forest.

Apparently the German word for the early internet utility Gopher was named for the vole, that is the wühlmaus. Or the guy thought that gophers are voles and translated badly.
Dank nach und nach entwickelter Archiv- und Suchsysteme mit so drolligen Namen wie " Gopher " ( Wühlmaus ), " Wais ", " Veronica " oder " Archie " konnte die Netzgemeinde diese Probleme zwar lindern.

Here is a lovely red-backed vole.

I can't tell them apart from any other rodents. Also I never go outside.

Distinguishing vole features are shorter tails than mice, smaller more hidden ears, and tinier eyes.

Why are the mouses eyes black? That's creepy as hell.

That's ordinary animal eyes, pretty standard
