Fast food restaurants have been playing with self-service kiosks, on and off, for over two decades. It's never been terribly successful. Mostly, people just get sick of having to punch in the order themselves and navigate multiple menus for various food options. They inevitably just complain, feel like they are being made to do the cashier's job for free, and end up bugging the staff constantly about how there isn't a button for 'extra mayo' or whatever. Most people just want to go in and shout their order at someone because it involves less thinking and less rubbing up against dirty touchscreens.

I think it will catch on with millennials who are used to doing everything on a touchscreen app. I thought about the "where's the button for extra mayo" problem and they could just show an exploded view of the burger with condiments and there's x-+ buttons by each condiment (for none, less, and more respectively).
I really like the self checkout machines at the grocery store. I wish fast food restaurants had kiosks here. I'm kind of socially anxious and I will gladly do the cashier's job for free in exchange for a zero chance of the cashier trying to be "friendly" or make small talk.

Yes, but you're a smart person and could design a decent UI. I give fast food restaurants much lower odds at doing this. They've been trying to make self-serve ordering catch on for a while with limited success. Hopefully, they will take a cue from online pizza delivery or other areas where the interface is pretty easy to use. Maybe it will catch on with newer generations. Some fast food restaurants have apps that you can use to order and pay before you even stop in to pick up your food, and those seem to be working out okay.
