I'll regularly eat canned fruit salads because of how easy and convenient they make healthy eating. I just leave the cans in the fridge, and when I get my workout munchies eat a few of those to fill up with some cinnamon and vanilla added.
However, I always have to strain out the artificial sweetener and then rinse the fruit before because otherwise it's too sweet. So far I've found pie cherries in water, which aren't really made to be eaten directly, but all the other fruit is always in artificial sweetener or syrup. I can't even find canned fruit in water online. Anyone else have this problem, or know why unadulterated canned fruit is such a rarity?

If you "can" buy fresh why use cans? If fresh is not available then sure the can stuff.
I bet canned has less vitamins then fresh, and just a guess....Can might cost more per pound then fresh.

Inconvenient and probably more expensive. It really doesn't make sense to me, on the other hand canned fruit is soft and delicious.

It's not too elaborate. It's simply a matter of taking the lid, pouring and then pushing out the liquid, filling the can (with lid still pressed down) up with water, and then pouring the water out again. It takes about 10 seconds per can and the fruit is always of reasonable quality. If I bought fresh, the fruit would not keep as well and not always be of edible quality. Additionally, it would probably take half a minute to cut and skin each piece of fruit, and a can has about 2 or 3 fruits.
I don't really eat canned fruit for the nutrients, but more for its low caloric density. I'm sure some of the antioxidants are lost during the boiling or canning process, but then I eat a lot of guacamole (with bread or fresh apples), so I probably do pretty well there. I also eat very little red meat for an American, usually going for poultry, egg whites, or skim milk for my protein, and I probably eat more fresh fruit as well (bananas and oranges usually).
