Freudian ideas of the id, ego and superego are relevant here. These three are like men fighting a eternal war for supremacy in the dark depths of our unconscious mind.
Id: the man who wants cake and cigarettes, nothing more, all the time.
Ego: the realistic guy who knows that you can't just watch porn all day. There are rules.
Superego: the guy who says we have to be better than just following the rules of society, we have to commit to the ideal aka morality.
When society is broken, the ego becomes weak in all men. A typical broken society offers no certainty and what is realistic or not is irrelevant as desperation becomes a everyday reason to disregard rules. In such situations the ego can't sustain itself and when realism is thrown out of the Window the superego becomes dangerous in its ideas of the ideal.
