Topic: We now have direct images of exoplanets orbiting their own star

Wow!!

https://exoplanets.nasa.gov/news/1404/a-four-planet-system-in-orbit-directly-imaged-and-remarkable/

(The black is masking the star so the planets are visible.)

If I become Mormon, then can one of those planets be mine one day?

Yes, you can have a gas giant with a 400-year year :)

Sweet.

I'm going to have to work out how to carry brass and golden plates without sinking dangerously far down into the atmosphere though. Maybe wooden submarines also work as airships in denser atmospheres...

All joking aside, this imagery is some pretty cool shit.

It was Syntax's satellite that captured these images.

They've been observing this for 8 years and we're just now finding out about it?!

I recall seeing pics of exoplanets like years ago.

I've seen Star Trek. We saw them actually beam down to those planets, so they obviously weren't just paintings.

No I mean like actual photos like this one from 2010

that looks remarkably similar to the star placement in the gif. looking at the op image it appears to run from 09 onwards. i wonder if that's literally from the same experiment

squeegee double-posted this 9 years ago, 1 minute later, 1 day after the original post[^] [v] #759,261

lol, oh wow, it literally is
meta's: This image shows the light from three planets orbiting a star 120 light-years away. The planets' star, called HR8799, is located at the spot marked with an "X."
op's: This evocative movie of four planets more massive than Jupiter orbiting the young star HR 8799 is a composite of sorts, including images taken over seven years at the W.M. Keck observatory in Hawaii.

A composite of artists impressions

The new images are definitely much better quality but Becky saying "we now have" direct images of exoplanets implies we did not previously have direct images of exoplanets, even though we did at least as far back as 2010.

Not just images of exoplanets, but images of exoplanets orbiting their own star.

And what's the deal with that 2010 image? No love for planet A? Did HR8799a just have the wrong agent?

It's like how WiFi went from A to B to G to N to AC. Maybe aliens designed WiFi?!

Could be that NASA slipped up trying to hide evidence of a planet A. I'm going to have Alex Jones get to the bottom of this.

Clearly planet A is a --terrorist-- "refugee" sent culturally enrich the HR8799 system.
