I don't actually play sports or even know any of the players on either sports team, but if my team (which I have zero ownership stake in) loses the sports I will stand up and scream at referees on teevee (they cannot hear me, of course) until I am purple faced and apopleptic with rage.
I will show my devotion to athletics by sitting in an overstuffed lay-z-boy recliner for 12 hours, binge drinking lite beer and scarfing down doritos and buffalo wings while watching younger, fitter, men play sports. If I actually spent half the time I spend watching sportsball playing sportsball instead (even in an amateurish fashion in the backyard or the local park), I would not need a handful of viagra to get it up. It's more fun to watch people do stuff which is why I watch cooking shows while eating delivery pizza and watch people plays sportsball while my arteries harden.
But back to the sportsball. I will show my team pride by wearing the $35 licensed jersey (made in a Bangladesh sweatshop by kids who get 22 cents an hour) and painting my face in the sportsball team colors. If I see a person who is wearing the colors of the other sports team I will remind them of how their team was trounced in the sports by ours. Go team.

I'm glad my city passed a $300 million bond issue to build a better stadium for the sportsing. They could have spent that money fixing potholes or paying down the municipal debt or even just buying everyone an ice cream. I'm glad the sportsing team owners (who are all billionaires) don't have to bear any of the burden for their sportsing facilities. Of course, if the next city over offers them a bigger bond issue and a fancier stadium they can just cut and run and we'll be left holding the bag.
