Of course the other thing you're not taking into account is that there's more than Hindus in India. The beef curry could have come from the Muslim part of India (keep in mind 1936 is before India was partitioned) where they have no problem eating beef.

Yeah that's what I meant. The recipe was 1936 so it could have come from what is now called Pakistan or a Muslim or Christian in today's India.

What effect does local religion have on dietary preference? Like say you're an atheist in Saudi Arabia, even if you don't believe a word of the Quran it's highly unlikely that you'd develop a taste for pork because nobody else in your area eats pork.
Just like even though I personally think eating a dog is not inherently worse than eating a pig, I'm never going to eat a dog because it's just something that's not done in America. There's no restaurants that serve dog, I can't buy dog at the grocery store, and I never ate dog as a child so it's just something I'll never do.

yeah good question
i'm sure it also depends on how individualistic the culture is
like i'm sure an omnivorous family in an entirely vegetarian neighborhood in america probably wouldn't stop eating meat
but in more collective cultures maybe that would be the case
also the population density in cities like bombay or delhi is fucking crazy
so i'm sure that i'd imagine it'd be very difficult to have areas that are almost entirely of one religion
of course rural areas would be different
