I've thought about this and here's what I see:
In the future there will be some kind of disaster with robots that kills a lot of people. This will lead to the creation of a "Federal Bureau of Automation Safety" or something like that. It will be funded by a HUGE tax on companies that use automation, and a HUGE tariff on imports. Work will be compulsory but it's okay because jobs will be guaranteed. Even if you're like literally retarded they will give you a job digging holes and then filling them back in again. Something, anything to keep people busy.
This bureaucracy will swell. It will provide millions and millions of easy but mind-numbing 9-5 paper pushing jobs with a middle class salary. Everyone will have a leased Lexus and tons of shiny iPads and shit. Everyone will be in debt but it's okay because the paper-pushing job provides just enough income to meet the monthly payments. Not enough to become rich but you won't be destitute either. Everyone will be living paycheck to paycheck (much like today!).
Idle hands are the devil's workshop. It will be necessary to keep people tied down in enough work and debt to stop them from overthrowing the system. Intellectual stimulation must be kept down. There will lurid trash on TV and sportsball and video games.
