First and foremost the hillary campaign had a false sense of security. Because they were so sure they would win, they were unable to treat trump supporters concerns as a real thing.
Second of all, the media made trump the underdog, the little man that doesn't get treated seriously. What i mean is that despite his big wealth, people managed to identify with him more than hillary because more or less we have all found ourselves to be alone in our stance in life/politics. And the media certainly made it seem he was alone against everyone else.
Third, I think people aren't comfortable with a white house dynasty.

In sacred grounds, there are wealthy people dressed up as such. Patting themselves on the back for raising the amount of charity money which is like pocket change to them.
They are so privileged that both candidate show up. But what happens is that trump gets booed. Making it look like that he does not belong with those people, that he is in fact better than that.

People were sick of Democrats fucking them over after 8 years, they had a terrible, fake, and pandering candidate, so the Dems that flipped just voted for the other guy and Republicans just backed their parties candidate.
Also, Russian hackers.

i think the dynasty thing is a (slightly) bigger factor than people think. consciously or not.
same sorta idea that got julius caesar killed/everyone hating octavian. the idea of a dynasty/therefore making a mockery of the idea of a republic.
