Topic: Trying to stop smoking

Anonymous A started this discussion 15 years ago #5,917

Image went missingSince I started doing a lot more exercise, I have decided to stop smoking. I tried going cold turkey but it was terrible (sweating, headaches, mood swings). Anyway now I have got myself down to 2-3 cigarettes a day, I think I'll keep smoking this amount for a week or so and then stop completely. It should be easier, right? I refuse to waste money on gum/patches/whatever, a pack of nicotine gum costs ~£10! Get fucked!

Anyone have advice/experience in this subject? Please share here.

I gave up smoking by never starting.

Is that the same thing you did with sex as well?

You need to find something to satisfy your oral fixation. I told Green a moment ago to use sunflower seeds if he wants to snack, but I also found that they helped me to not smoke. The shelled kind are ideal; you can chew on a mouthful for a good amount of time and that's a lot better than smoking a cigarette.

They are frustrating after a while! Especially when there's cracked sunflower seeds out there. :'|

Some smokers believe that if they cut down on cigarettes, eventually it will be easier to give up. If you honestly believe that this will help you, then go ahead and do it. But think about this first. Cutting down might be helpful for a week or two, but in the long term you are likely to follow the familiar pattern of smokers who simply carry on as before, maybe even smoking more.

The strategy of cutting down is often adopted by people who use willpower to quit smoking. Deep down, if they are honest with themselves, they don't really want to give up; there is an impulse inside them that still wants to smoke. Also bear in mind that cutting down is very much like using nicotine replacement products, in that you never actually stop putting nicotine into your body. The sooner you stop completely and get to the stage where there is no more nicotine in your body, the sooner you will start to build new habits, which is the key to successfully stopping smoking permanently.
